Mr. McBobo strikes again!

Once again, the inevitable “has he ever…?” question arises, as it does with pretty much every column David Brooks writes. In this case, it’s a small variation on the theme: Has he ever heard of Google? Dana catches David Brooks in a fine display of what I call Googlestupid- the act of looking like a […]

Oh, Mr. McBobo, can’t you get anything right?

Even when he confines his column to what one imagines would be his own comfort zone — grandiose yet unsupported sociological generalizations — Brooks manages to screw it up, conflating Neal Pollack-style Williamsburg hipster parents with their upscale Urban-Baby-Dot-Com/Maclaren-stroller-buying Park Slope counterparts.* There’s certainly some overlap, but these are actually two very distinct types. I […]

Mr. McBobo strikes yet again

Whenever a new study suggests that the wimmenfolk are gettin’ a mite too uppity, you can always count on David Brooks to react with (a) alarm and (b) some Deep Thoughts about Things Society Needs to Do if it Hopes to Earn David Brooks’ Approval. So when this piece ran a couple of days ago, […]

That has calamitous effects on education and development. There are many cultural ways to strengthen marriage, but financially, the government could extend the earned income […]

Mr. McBobo strikes again

David Brooks last week: Members of the second and much more persuasive school of thought on inequality say the key issue is skills. Lawrence Katz, formerly of the Clinton administration, now of Harvard, puts it this way: Across many nations, the market increasingly rewards people with high social and customer-service skills. A contractor who can […]

Mister McBobo

In this morning’s column, Brooks comes up with a clever new nickname for Markos — the Keyboard Kingpin, ha ha ha! — and says that he is the “moral doppleganger” of Tom Delay. I think David Brooks has not been this insightful since he suggested that women should spend the years between 20 and 40 […]
